Blocked Account
Understanding the blocked account requirement for German student visas
What is a Blocked Account?
A blocked account (Sperrkonto) is a special bank account required for international students applying for a German student visa. It serves as proof that you have sufficient funds to cover your living expenses in Germany.
Required Amount
The current requirement is €11,904 per year (€992 per month). This amount is set by the German government and is updated annually.
How It Works
- You deposit the required amount into a blocked account before applying for your visa
- The money is "blocked" - you cannot withdraw it all at once
- Once in Germany, you can withdraw up to €992 per month
- The account must be opened with an approved German bank or financial service provider
